Homemade Sloppy Joes
( Back to Cookbook Main Menu | Back to Beef Dishes | Back to Sandwiches)

I have been looking for a sloppy joes recipe for a while. I found the beginning recipe for this one on-line. These are very good, as is, but add some hot sauce if you like them spicer.

My favorite new way to server these is to stuff the sloppy joe mix inside a uncut sandwich bun. Take a bolillo bun, or some other unsliced sandwich roll, cut the end off and hollow out the loaf without cutting through to the outside. Spoon the meat mixture into this roll, and enjoy the sloppy joe without making a mess.

1 lb ground beef (85/15)
1 cup onion, finely chopped
1/3 cup celery, finely chopped
1/4 - 1/3 cup bell pepper, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
3 tbls ketchup
2 tbls barbecue sauce

1/4 cup water
1 - 2 tbls red wine (optional)
1 tbls light brown sugar
1 tbls Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tbls cider vinegar
1 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp kosher salt, or to taste
3/4 tsp black pepper, or to taste

Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium high heat (do not drain the grease). Add the onion, garlic, celery, and bell pepper. Cook until the vegetables are done.

Combine the remaining ingredients in a bowl, mix well. Add this mixture to the skillet, cover and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally (add about 1/2 cup water if needed).

Uncover the skillet, and continue to cook the mixture until it's the consistency you like for serving.

Cliff Note 1: We use Sweet Baby Ray's barbeque sauce.

Cliff Note 2: For the kids, serve this sloppy joes mix over a hotdog kind of like a chilidog.
