Frances' Nuts and Bolts
( Back to Cookbook Main Menu | Back to Appetizers | Back to Snack Food Recipes )

This was another holiday favorite around the Hamilton house, and was often given as a gift. My sister is still carrying on this tradition with this same recipe, and it still gets rave reviews.

This is a slightly updated version. Mainly because the box sizes have changed. Mom's original version can be found here).

1 box of Chex cereals (Wheat, Rice, or Corn)
1 box of Crispix
1 box of Cheerios
1 box of Cheez-it
1 bag of pretzels
1 lb can of mixed nuts

Sauce:
1 1/2 tbls Worstershire
3 1/2 sticks of butter (not margarine)
2/3 cup bacon grease
1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 1/2 tsp celery salt
1 1/2 tsp oregano
1 1/2 tsp chili powder
2 dash Tabasco Sauce

In a large bowl mix together the 3 boxes of cereal, the pretzels, and nuts.

Melt the bacon grease and butter, and mix together. Add the spices, and pour over cereal mixture. Mix very well.

Put this mixture into a baking pan and place it in the oven at 250 degree for at least 4 hours, stirring frequently. Let cool.

Cliff Note: We make this using a couple of very large disposable aluminum pans. Mix in the pans and then bake.
