Homemade Sloppy Joe Sauce
( Back to Cookbook Main Menu | Back to Beef Dishes | Back to Sandwiches)

We have been making our own sloppy joes for a while now. The other day I dicided to make up a double batch of just the sauce, and freeze it. Worked great! This way a sloppy joes is just a pound of browned ground beef away. Just like the canned sauces, but much better. Here is the sauce recipe for a single batch.

2 tbls vegetable oil
1 cup onion, finely chopped
1/3 cup celery, finely chopped
1/4 - 1/3 cup bell pepper, finely chopped
1 lage clove garlic, minced
1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
3 tbls ketchup
2 tbls barbecue sauce

1 cup water
1 - 2 tbls red wine (optional)
1 tbls light brown sugar
1 tbls Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tbls cider vinegar
1 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp kosher salt, or to taste
3/4 tsp black pepper, or to taste

Heat the oil to medium high in a large sauce pan. Add the onions, garlic, celery, and bell pepper. Cook until the vegetables start to soften. Add the tomato sauce and continue to cook for a couple more minutes while stirring constantly. Add all the remaining ingredients, and mix well. Cover the pan and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. At this point the sauce can be stored in the refrigerator or frozen for further use.

Cliff Note: We use Sweet Baby Ray's barbeque sauce.
